Greenbuild(ing) 2010 - Another Great Conference Celebrating Another Year of Growth! - FALL '10 Newsletter

Each year, Greenbuild gathers thousands of participants from all over the world to meet, celebrate, and share stories of challenges, successes, new innovations and new products to make the world a better place. Greenbuild is a great source for education and inspiration.

This year is another celebration as the industry continues forward despite struggles with the economy, changes in leadership, etc. there are many things we can look back at and reflect upon when it comes to the sustainable movement.

PlanetReuse is proud to be part of this movement to move the design and construction industry forward making reclaimed materials a viable option on new commercial and residential projects.

Defining Industrial Design and 5 Green Designs.

In the "What is 'Industrial Design?'" article, Tucker Veimester examines an industry that is not fully understood: Industrial Design. He chose to follow his father's publication projet that is today the magazine known as 'I.D.' It began in 1943 as a section titled, "Industrial Design," in the magazine called, "Interiors." At this time, it focused on how the new industry would address a post-war America. Then, the section was demo-ed and its' own full publication in 1947 titled, "Industrial Design," was born. Later re-titled to, "I.D. Magazine," the magazine content began to morph when the covered trends began to involve, "more scientific processes and theories." Since the magazine was covering a more international basis, from that point forth, the publication's initials would no longer stand for Industrial Design. It would be more suitable as International Design (I.D.) Magazine. What originally had began as a section devoted specifically to the industry now had been turned into a broader base of several industries, thus, blurring the boundaries of what Industrial Design is. Here to set the record straight on what Industrial (Product) Design is, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA).

"Industrial Design(ID) is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer. Industrial designers develop these concepts and specifications through collection, analysis and synthesis of data guided by the special requirements of the client or manufacturer. They are trained to prepare clear and concise recommendations through drawings, models and verbal descriptions."

In a field that began in the plastic-less, electronic-less year of 1938, Industrial (Product) Design has grown to have 27 local chapters throughout the United States. Today, this field is facing the same problems other design industries are facing with the, "go green," initiative: coming up with innovative ways to solve a problem while still remaining earth-friendly. Below are five product designs that are some of the most innovative ways to sustain-ably solve problems at-hand.

"Capturing water which would normally go down the drain, when washing hands, cleaning the veges, or even the warm up water in the shower. Submerge in the bath and this water can also be reused to water the garden."

"Green pockets are ceramic tiles which fuse nature with the interior space improving both air quality and health...The tiles, made from recycled materials, serve as planters and their unique shape allows them to interlock, thereby creating different patterns depending on the vegetation planted."

Residential playroom project: photos uploaded!

PlanetReuse, C&G Construction, and el dorado architects collaborate on a Prairie Village, KS residential playroom project made with sinker reclaimed wood.

"The rich look and history inherent in salvaged materials can make a big difference on efforts of any scope. For a large playroom expansion, a Kansas family exploring reclaimed materials fell in love with sinker reclaimed cypress. Sinker materials are those that have been submerged for a number of years, in this case, in a Louisiana bayou for more than a century. For a cohesive visual look, the design team used the material in several ways, as flooring, wall panels and on the pitched ceiling in the interior, and for balconies on the exterior of the addition.

The cypress showed an astounding range of subtle colors from the minerals absorbed while underwater. The client felt the materials - with its heritage, story and natural beauty - was a fitting match for a space that would sustain their children's imagination for years to come."

More than Just Wood: The Many Faces of Reclaimed Building Materials - F'09 Newsletter


Mention reclaimed materials and the image pops: salvaged wood beautifully repurposed as paneling or flooring. While reclaimed wood is indeed one of the most popular reused materials, the range of materials sought and available extends far beyond that.
“Reclaimed wood is a classic, and it’s an idea most people are familiar with,” said PlanetReuse operations manager Tim Bensman. “But we’re seeing a growing market for steel, doors, access flooring, granite and marble. Steel, especially, offers huge potential for reuse, and along with that a huge potential for cost savings as well as a greater ability to achieve additional LEED material reuse credits.” The LEED MR system awards credit for reuse of a variety of reclaimed materials. PlanetReuse works with the design team early enough in the process to allow a huge list of options for consideration.
Ryerson University in Toronto has been studying steel reuse for a number of years, surveying designers, demolition contractors, salvage yards and steel fabricators to better understand the steel lifecycle. A 2006 report determined that construction steel reuse resulted in the reduction of between 3,000 and 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year, a number that could grow dramatically with increased awareness.
Steel recycling has always been popular, especially in Europe. The UK-based Steel Construction Institute estimates recycling rates at 85 percent or higher. But reuse of steel components—which as the purest form of recycling provides the highest benefit to the environment—demands a bit more quality control.
To create those standards, PlanetReuse is working with prominent structural engineers around the country to establish fundamental testing principles. The company is actively sourcing reclaimed steel from deconstruction contractors, delivering a message of profitability for quality steel components.
They’re also talking to design principals around the globe, both to in regards to available inventory and insight on how to incorporate reclaimed materials. In recent years, architects designing shorter-term buildings (like venues for the 2012 Olympics in London) have suggested demountable venues that can be partially or completely removed and reused elsewhere.
“We’ve really just scratched the surface when it comes to the diversity of reclaimed materials,” said Bensman. “The easier the process becomes the more you’ll see materials of all types available for incorporation into new building projects. Whether that’s tons of steel, a dozen doors or a small slab of granite, the key is communication between those who need it and those who have it.”

Is FSC enough?

Recently, I decided I really needed to do my homework and dig into what FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified wood really is. The answer I got was disappointing to say the least.

While I respect what FSC is trying to accomplish, I learned that there are still not sufficient sustainable logging practices taking place throughout this certification. What is even more alarming is what it takes to become FSC CoC (Chain of Custody) certified.

Essentially, the FSC applicant pays a fee (considerable in amount) to engage the certification body to "audit" the company. This basically is to analyze the company's practices from operations to supplier's and so on. Where this gets a little blurry is that the lumber company for example now has to receive a CoC certification. What this means is that they have to show documentation tracing back the logs from where they were forested to show that they were "sustainably" harvested.

So I dug a little deeper to see what sustainably harvested meant and was forwarded here. And after much digging finally ended up finding the document which outlines recommendations for sustainable harvesting here.

Here is where I jump off the FSC bandwagon.

After reviewing the documents they outline a series of reforestation practices, planting planning and so on to promote sustainable forestry. However, they also get into how not to "disturb the indigenous peoples through logging" which sent up a "hey whats that?" flag in my mind.

The last indigenous people I knew of in North America were the Native American Indians. But wait....

According to FSC requirements, you can log in Africa, China, Russia and Peru. Then ship the logs to be milled in plants in Mexico, China and India and then finally shipped here to the states. Whaa?

Whats the carbon footprint for that 2x4??

I was really expecting to see local harvesting promoted, if not a standardized practice such as mulching roots of cut trees to replenish the exact nutrients in the soil new trees need. Or how to selectively cut trees to maintain shade and soil protection as opposed to allowing "controlled clear cutting so long as the eco-system is not changed" All in all I was a little put back by FSC's requirements.

Enough griping, now I would like to challenge the Forestry Stewardship Council to reform their protocols and drastically increase the sustainability of the forestry practices currently written into its standards by the following:

Jobs - If FSC is truly trying to promote sustained job growth then I believe some in our current US economy would really appreciate a job at a mill in Atlanta or Florida sustainably harvesting our current supply of trees.

Fuel Conservation/Pollution - The fact is that Stewardship is cyclical. Stewardship regards all costs and activities to determine its sustainability. Thus the same old way of exporting and importing wood just won't work anymore... so change it. If that means the CEO won't get any FSC certified zebra wood for his desk so be it....maybe he can find reclaimed huh?

Global Standards - Great start, just not enough. I recently heard how the treeline in Canada isn't getting as cold as it used to. So the tree ravaging insects that otherwise would have their populations controlled by freezing temperatures are now thriving. This is resulting in complete forest systems being wiped out. The world isn't waiting, change faster.

I don't want this to seem like a rant on FSC wood however, if you're going to reform an industry you can't do it by making it easy or even remotely possible by doing the same old practices as before with some minor revisions.
