PlanetReuse and reused steel sourcing

Designers and builders have long recognized and lauded steel for its strength, durability, and functionality. Increasingly, however, architects are recognizing steel’s important environmental attributes — especially its high recycled content and high reclamation rate.

For many years, there has been a strong economic motive to incorporate recycling into the process for making steel, but today's environmental concerns make recycling even more important. Recycling saves money while conserving energy andresources, as well as reducing solid, liquid, and gaseous wastes. Recycling also helps to spread the energy impact of the original extraction and manufacturing of the material over infinite generations of new steel.

Not only does using recycled steel contribute positively to the bottom line, but it also contributes towards LEED. The location of the fabricator, and not just the mill, can be when calculating the local and regional material used on a project. This helps designers reach LEED 3.1, 3.2 in addition to 4.1 and 4.2:

Credit 4.1 (1 point) "Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of postconsumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% (based on cost) of the total value of the materials in the project."

Credit 4.2 (1 point) "Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 20% of the total value of the materials in the project."

Planet Reuse recently at HNTB architects!

A big thanks to Walt Bleser for arranging our last lunch and learn with the team at HNTB! It was a great turnout and exciting to hear how HNTB has embraced sustainable design practices and are so open to material reuse! We look forward to working with HNTB and their talented design staff soon.

Finding navigation problems or other usability issues on PlanetReuse.com?

We've recently released our 2.5 version. Unfortunately, the last build had a minor bug with the image thumbnails on the material listings page we're working on fixing this evening.

We believe that all of the issues have been captured and taken care of, but be sure to email us at dfox @ planetreuse.com or comment in this thread if you identify any other usability issues. As always, we welcome feedback and recommendations on how to improve the user experience over at PlanetReuse.

(oh, and watch for the release of the online shop for our 3.0 version in January!)

Cheers,

LEED with PlanetReuse.com

Want to use reclaimed and salvage materials to save the environment? Do you have salvaged and reclaimed building materials to sell? Are you looking for a way to get those LEED MR credits?

PlanetReuse.com is the answer.

As featured in Dwell, HGTV, Bob Vila and Greenability, PlanetReuse has become the most anticipated, free to use site in the design, construction, salvage, demolition and LEED community.

And it’s no wonder why. PlanetReuse’s simple and easy-to-use format allows demolition and salvage professionals to easily post and sell their materials and products online. With its robust search capabilities, architects, homeowners and design professionals can sort through a large amount of listings to quickly get to the products they’re looking for.

The best part is that it’s totally FREE to use! No weird credits to buy. No forced advertising. No listing fees. No product searching fees. No charge to ask questions to sellers about a product. It’s totally free to use!

So what exactly is PlanetReuse? It's is an online warehouse that connects buyers and sellers of reclaimed, reusable and excess building materials.

- We take care of the sale through the site and keep it safe with PayPal on transactions up to $1,000,000.00.

- We offer multiple shipping options as a free service through the site with established partners in FreightQuote and FedEx.

- We coordinate for local pickup for our buyers and sellers and let them save on shipping costs if they want to take care of it themselves.

- We create a community of trust and reputation with user ratings after every transaction.

- We let users post questions about listed products on our message boards to the seller at no cost.

- Users even get points for buying and selling through PlanetReuse, redeemable for American Express gift cards!

We aren’t eBay and we aren’t Craigslist. We’re simply better, because PlanetReuse is focused on the construction community and providing buyers and sellers with the best online tool for material reuse by reaching the right audience.

There is a huge need for design professionals and builders to connect and keep our Earth’s valuable resources in buildings and out of landfills. We believe in the power of homeowners to live sustainably and use reclaimed materials in their homes. And we believe that as Green building practice becomes just plain good design, PlanetReuse will be there to support these efforts.

Feel free to forward this on to anyone who might want to know about this valuable resource and thanks for joining the REmovement of virgin materials from our waste stream with PlanetReuse.com!

Yep we're finally in beta! And will be until March 3rd when we officially send out our invites to our listers and start to change the world for the greater, more environmentally responsible good! I know myself, Nathan, Dan and Jiang have worked sooo hard making this a reality and a great tool for so many great people out there that it's good to sit back for a moment and look how far we've come.

I'm really amazed and blessed to be working with such a great crew, such as these gents and can't say enough good things about how much their hard work is appreciated!

I have started to get an enormous response from people all over anticipating the release of the site and who look forward to using it and want to be a part of it.

To those of you who don't know much about it feel free to check it out, but keep in mind you are only looking at the beta version. However, to give you an idea it's an online digital warehouse for users all over the world to use to reduce the flow of additional virgin materials into the waste stream. We allow buyers and sellers to post and buy products directly from the site and have integrated Freightquote.com and FedEx shipping into the mix to create a seamless process from start to finish.
